Within the Twente Board, Gerard was known as a strong advocate of collaboration across municipal boundaries. He helped shape Twente’s strategic agenda, with a focus on innovation, talent development and broad prosperity. Guided by the belief that when Twente succeeds, its individual municipalities succeed as well, he consistently looked beyond local interests. This perspective was reflected in his commitment to the region as a whole and to major regional developments such as the Spoorzone Hengelo–Enschede.

"What characterises Gerard is his focus on implementation and results. He did not remain at the planning stage but created momentum by making decisions and following through. Throughout his work, he kept the shared regional interest at the forefront and contributed to a Twente that continues to create opportunities for future generations. Through this approach, he made an important contribution to strengthening Twente’s position, both within and beyond the region." These were the words of Chair Ank Bijleveld-Schouten during Gerard Gerrits' farewell from the Twente Board.

The Twente Board thanks Gerard Gerrits for his commitment, dedication and valuable contribution to regional collaboration.
