Two companies from Twente are leading the development of the European missile defense shield

Bliksem EXO intercepts ballistic missiles high above the atmosphere, before they even reach their target. In doing so, the system fills a gap that has been missing in European air defense until now: existing systems provide protection closer to the ground, while Bliksem EXO operates above it. Together, they form a single, cohesive shield that meets the standards of NATO and the European Sky Shield Initiative. This combination of radar, sensors, and interceptors is known as Integrated Air and Missile Defense (IAMD).

The Strength of Twente

Within the partnership, each company has its own role. Thales supplies the radar and sensor chain: the “eyes” that detect an incoming threat. As project leader, Destinus plays a key role in system integration: bringing together radar, sensors, software, and interceptors into a single operational defense system.

Twente has built a strong position in the field of radar and sensor technology and system integration—precisely the core of integrated air and missile defense. This position is due to close collaboration between companies, research institutions, and government agencies. As a result, organizations from the region are playing an increasingly important role in the development of defense and security technology.

The development of a European intercept capability contributes to greater strategic autonomy for Europe in the field of air and missile defense.

Developments within the defense sector strengthen Twente’s position as a leading green technology region and create new opportunities for innovation and collaboration. Much of what is developed here is dual-use: technology that, in addition to defense, also has value in sectors such as healthcare, energy, and mobility. In this way, the region not only contributes to Europe’s security but also strengthens its economic and technological position.
