Our delivery program has recently been extended with a series of new fan models and to fully benefit from these models, the mathematical model requires more flexibility than the current model can offer therefore, we want to redevelop this model and for this task. We are looking for a math student who wants to take on the challenge.

Details internship assignment

The current model is a two-variable polynomial of which the coefficients have been determined by curve fitting on experimental data. These coefficients determine the overall shape of the curves, yet allowing very limited local control. We aim for a new model based on 3D spline interpolation between a set of control points, which will offer maximum local control and overall flexibility. 

The new model must incorporate:

  • A method to describe the Spline surface defining the fan performance curves in mathematical terms, based on a limited set of scattered control points.
  • A method of finding the duty point, i.e. the intersection point between the Spline surface and the exponential system resistance curve.
  • The description of an algorithm of finding the optimal duty point by variation of the independent variables fan speed and fan blade pitch angle, thereby respecting certain boundary conditions.
  • It is possible to work from home on this assignment. A number of contact moments are necessary though, especially during the start-up phase. The assignment must be completed with a report, written in English and with a presentation of the results.


  • Student Mathematics HBO (Bachelor) / University;
  • Knowledge of Spline interpolation methods;
  • The ability to capture the model in algorithms;
