Chips are everywhere – in our homes, cars, hospitals, factories and even in security systems. They’ve become essential to modern life. That’s why the global chip shortage has had such a huge impact – on the economy, on security, and on how dependent we are on other parts of the world. One major response to this was the European Union’s Chips Act – a legislative initiative aimed at boosting chip production and innovation in Europe, encouraging cooperation between research institutes and companies, and reducing Europe’s reliance on other regions.

Here in Twente, we’ve got the expertise – in photonics, quantum tech, and microfluidics – and that puts us in the perfect position to work closely with other Dutch regions to build a strong semiconductor cluster. The goal? To bring all these technologies together and create heterogeneous systems – the next generation of advanced chips.
