First Semicon Learning Centre in the Netherlands opens in Twente

The opening marks the next step in the implementation of the Twente Microchip Talent Reinforcement Plan. Through this programme, Twente is making a significant contribution to the national ambition to train more technical talent for the Dutch chip sector and to strengthen the Netherlands’ international competitiveness.

A single network for the chip sector of tomorrow

The Semicon Learning Centre is not a stand-alone venue, but part of a regional network of six learning environments spread across Twente. Together, these venues bring further education, higher professional education, university education and the business community closer together.

Each location focuses on a specific part of the semiconductor supply chain. This creates a network in which students, career changers and professionals are introduced to the full breadth of the sector: from chip design and chip manufacturing to mechanical engineering, cleanroom technology, precision engineering and process control.

By linking education and practice in this way, study programmes are better aligned with the needs of businesses, and participants are given the opportunity to learn in an environment directly linked to the day-to-day reality of the chip sector.

Technical talent as the key to growth

The demand for technical talent is growing rapidly. In Twente alone, companies active in the chip industry and the ASML supply chain will need thousands of additional skilled workers in the coming years.

Twente is one of the most important chip regions in the Netherlands. Companies, knowledge institutions and public authorities have been working together here for many years on the development of new technology, innovation and talent. The Semicon Learning Centre builds on this collaboration and makes it visible to students, workers and companies.

From education to innovative strength

The Twente Microchip Talent Reinforcement Plan focuses on attracting, training and retaining talent for the semiconductor sector. Within the programme, educational institutions, businesses and public authorities are working together to find solutions to one of the biggest challenges facing the Dutch chip industry: ensuring there are enough well-trained people.

The Semicon Learning Centres play a key role in this. They strengthen collaboration between the education sector and industry, make technology accessible to new target groups and help retain more talent for the region and the sector.

Collaboration across the entire ecosystem

Within the network, organisations including ROC van Twente, Saxion University of Applied Sciences, the University of Twente (MESA+), REMO, SMEOT, STODT, Process Your Future and Ondernemend Twente are working together with companies from the chip and high-tech sectors. Together, they are building a future-proof ecosystem in which education, research and entrepreneurship reinforce one another.

Invitation: attend the opening of the first Semicon Learning Centre

On Thursday 24 September, the first Semicon Learning Centre will officially open its doors at REMO in Rijssen. During the opening, visitors will be given a glimpse into the practical environment where the education sector and industry are working together to develop new technical talent for the semiconductor sector.
