A perfect example of this is recent research conducted by the University of Twente, where scientists developed a groundbreaking method to make extremely small metal nanoparticles visible. Thanks to an ingenious gold nanosandwich - a minuscule cavity between a gold film and a gold nanoparticle - researchers are able to amplify light in such a way that the smallest structures can be seen clearly.
This breakthrough opens up new applications, for example in early disease diagnosis, environmental sensors, or the inspection of chips on a nanoscale. It is exactly this kind of groundbreaking technology that positions Twente as a place where science, entrepreneurship, and social impact reinforce each other.
