1. Orientate to relevant sectors

First, to find a tech internship that really suits you, it is important to look closely at a company that matches your studies and interests. Twente is strong in a number of technological fields:

  • Chiptech & semicon: large companies such as VDL ETG, Benchmark and Demcon. But also smaller players such as Techspread, which focuses on data analysis and consultancy.
  • Medtech & health: for example Micronit, MST and TechMed Centre. For more hands-on experience, check out Incubase, the University of Twente's student incubator supporting startups.
  • Robotics & AI: Thales, Xsens and Clear Flight Solutions are well known, while GameLab Oost offers challenging internships in interactive technology and serious games.
  • Sustainability & materials: Twente is strong in sustainable technologies and innovative materials. Large companies like NX Filtration and Pure Energie, but also labs like MESA+ Nanolab, TPRC Lab and the Circular Textile Lab offer internships.

Tip: don't just look at the big names. Smaller companies also often have challenging internships and you will get responsibility faster there.

2. Search for internships through online platforms and events

Online, you can easily find a good overview of current internships and assignments. Check out the following examples:

  • Job Portal of Twente is the perfect place to find your internship. You will find an overview of almost all internships, graduation projects and other functions at companies in Twente!
  • Novel-T SMART is a collection of all kinds of internships and assignments at companies dealing with various question.
  • On LinkedIn! Many companies post their vacancies and internships there.

Not every internship is offered online. You will find great opportunities through your network:

  • Visit events such as the Talent Garden Twente and Business Days Twente to meet employers.
  • Talk to teachers or alumni who often have direct contacts at companies.
  • Be proactive: send a short, concrete e-mail to your favourite companies with who you are, what project or theme appeals to you and what you want to learn or contribute

Extra tip: combine online search with personal contact. A message on LinkedIn or a conversation at an event can make just the difference between no response and being invited.

3. Showcase yourself

After you have found the right companies, it is important to present yourself in a professional manner.

CV: keep it clear, maximum 2 pages.
Motivation letter: make the link between your studies and their projects.
Portfolio (if relevant): show what you have already created or researched.

4. Prepare for the interview

Good preparation not only gives you insight into the company, but also increases your confidence during the interview.

Familiarise yourself with the company's projects (check their website or recent press releases).
Devise questions that show that you are thinking along, for example: ‘What role does sustainability play within your innovations?’
Practice your pitch: who are you, what can you do and why exactly do you want to intern here

5. Keep persevering

Finding an internship takes time. Sometimes you don't hear back or you drop out. That does not always say something about you, but often about the timing or internal processes. So plan your search well in advance (at least 3-4 months before the start date).

Finding a tech internship in Twente requires preparation, but the opportunities are huge. By cleverly orientating yourself, proactively approaching companies and preparing well for interviews, you will increase your chances of finding the place that really suits you. This way, you take an important step towards your career in one of the most innovative regions of the Netherlands.
