In women, the diagnostic process is known to be somewhat longer in case of vague complaints. Other diagnosis such as burn – out or depression might be given more often, even if physical complaints underlie the complaints.
In this project you will use large databases (e.g. the Netherlands Cancer registry, NIVEL Eerstelijns zorgregistratie, Intercity database or Pharmo registry) to compare the diagnostic trajectory between men and women and get insight in possible differences in the diagnosis before the final diagnosis of cancer. Moreover, stage at diagnosis will be analysed as well. The possible use of AI in analyzing this data will enable us to find patterns in the data which can give us more insight in the reasons for delay.
To understand the behavioural components included in this process, we will carry out a systematic review of behaviour, cognitions and emotions in patients and GPs with special attention for differences in men and women in the different phases of the diagnostic delay in cancer.
The results of the above mentioned projects will be used to write (a) grant application(s) to be able to continue the work.
- vision and ambitious drive (seeing opportunities and possibilities, showing ambition towards contributing to the field of quality of care for women’s health, and better understanding of gender differences in cancer diagnosis);
- knowledge of and experience in quantitative research (working with large databases) in combination with qualitative research (interviews and focus groups);
- hold a PhD degree in epidemiology, psychology or a related field and have experience in research, which is apparent from publications in reputable academic journals, presentations in international scientific conferences, and other academic activities;
- conduct qualitative and quantitative research within a multidisciplinary environment;
- active in networks for acquiring research funding, and have ambition and experience in working closely with government agencies;
- collaborate with the Netherlands Comprehensive Cancer Organisation (IKNL) and other institutions who host large patient databases with information on diagnosis and treatment;
- good communication skills and an excellent command of English.
- A full-time position for 1 years, and the flexibility to work (partially) from home;
- Your salary and associated conditions are in accordance with the collective labour agreement for Dutch universities (CAO-NU);
- You will receive a gross monthly salary ranging from € 3.557,- to € 4.670,- ;
- There are excellent benefits including a holiday allowance of 8% of the gross annual salary, an end-of-year bonus of 8.3%, and a solid pension scheme;
- A minimum of 232 leave hours in case of full-time employment based on a formal workweek of 38 hours. A full-time employment in practice means 40 hours a week, therefore resulting in 96 extra leave hours on an annual basis;

About the department
